Why is it important to hire a well-qualified personal trainer?
While some answers may seem obvious, it's important to know not all credentials are created equal.
I say this because the 3rd Hour Today Show on NBC had a news segment that was very insightful! The reporter demonstrated how she took an online personal training exam from a non-accredited program, used Google search to find the answers, passed with a 72%, and then printed her certification.
Tah dah...she's now a certified personal trainer.
Did I mention she never studied for the exam or that she didn't have an educational background in anatomy and kinesiology?
Please be well-informed!
I've been an ACE certified personal trainer since 2004 and I can't emphasize how important it is to work with a well-qualified fitness professional.
Here are 3 criteria, but not limited to, when you're selecting a personal trainer.
1) Credentials.
A trainer should be able to show you a fitness certification in their particular area of expertise. To become certified, personal trainers must pass an exam through accredited organizations such as The American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). This ensures they've met certain standards of professionalism and competence from a trustworthy organization. Also, is the personal training certification along with being CPR/AED certification up-to-date?
2) Philosophy.
How does the trainer develop his program, and on what beliefs will it be based? Is it gym-based workouts or meant to be done outside? Will you be using machines or sticking solely to free weights? Ask about philosophy and see if it makes sense for your goals and preferences.
3) Specialties.
If you're looking for something specific like getting ready for your first marathon, you'll want to work with a trainer who specializes in running. Not only will they have more expertise in your desired area, but chances are the personal trainer will be more passionate to empower you and also have a vested interest in your success.
Committed to your success!
